Modbus: A de-facto standard for Ethernet networks in automation

You are an automation user or supplier.  You have been working in the industry for a while.  You must have worked with Modbus as your automation network.  So why don’t you join the Modbus Organization community!

How much do you know about the Modbus Organization?

The Modbus Organization is a community formed by independent users and suppliers of automation devices implementing the Modbus protocol and participating in its evolution under the Modbus-user guidelines. As a Modbus-user, you get a real voice in proposing extensions to the protocol, since Modbus is truly an open protocol. Suppliers can get promotional opportunities and a variety of tools for increasing the visibility of Modbus products; independent users can get access to training opportunities and application information to help make Modbus installations successful.

Since 1976, Modbus has been a de-facto standard protocol in the automation market running over different physical layers - one of these layers is Ethernet. It has now become a de-facto standard running over Ethernet due to two main facts, among many others:

  • Its cost effectiveness is due to its ease of deployment and minimal hardware requirements.
  • Its openness is due to ease of deploying Modbus devices in the automation industry, and no mandatory enrollment in a networking organization to obtain the Modbus information - equal access for all Modbus-users.

Modbus offers today, running over Ethernet, what no other industrial protocol is able to support: Scalability and cost effectiveness for a user.

Modbus is a part of the Schneider Electric Transparent Ready solution. We are proud of our participation in the Modbus community and we invite all users including system designers, and component and device manufacturers who work with Modbus to support the organization and help make this truly open standard their own.

The continued support of the Modbus-open standard reinforces the Transparent Ready message to the automation community
